Prishtina, 9 August 2012

The Security Council Secretariat is the first institution in Kosovo which has been equipped with Security Clearance certificates for its employers.

The start of the vetting process for Kosovo Security Council Secretariat employees who will have access to classified information, was based on legal responsibilities as well as the request of the Director of the Kosovo Security Council Secretariat (KSCS)

The Kosovo Intelligence Agency, as the only verifying authority in the Republic of Kosovo, undertook all necessary legal activities to vet these employees and gave Security Clearance to all persons considered an acceptable risk for the security of the Republic of Kosovo.

This obligation of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency (KIA) derives from the Law on the Classification of Information and Security Verification, on the basis of which KIA is responsible for all security vetting processes, the monitoring and coordination of developments regarding protection of classified information, and the development and implementation of physical, organizational and technical standards, for the protection of classified information.

In order to fulfill legal obligations, the KIA founded the Department of Security Verification which is responsible for all security vetting procedures for physical and legal persons having any form of access to classified information.

The creation and functionalization of this mechanism for protecting classified information and security vetting contributes to raising the level of security in the Republic of Kosovo and at the same time, brings Kosovo closer to EU and NATO standards.
