The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, received in a cordial meeting in the Prime Minister’ office the former political prisoners of Kosovo, who were kept in Serbian prisons even during the war in Kosovo. Recalling the shared period spent as political prisoners, in this conversation they talked about the terrible torture and systematic violence that was practiced in Serbian prisons against Albanian political prisoners.
They recalled the events of June 1999, when Serbian forces withdrew from Kosovo on June 10, and when over two thousand Albanians were transferred to prisons in Serbia.
They talked about this period between June and July 1999, when they were considered missing, as their families had no information about their whereabouts or fate.
The former political prisoners also evoked the memories of their prison mates who are no longer alive and of those who were not at today’s meeting.
In the joint meeting with the Director of the Institute for Crimes Committed during the War, it was also discussed about the institutional and social responsibility for preserving the collective memory and documenting the crimes committed by Serbia during the 1998-99 war, as well as the need to engage the system of justice.
