Minister for dialogue Edita Tahiri, met with the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, now Sudan ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Mustafa Osman Ismail, to discuss the possibility of recognizing Kosovo’s independence from Sudan. The meeting was held in Geneva, in the Sudan mission to the UN on Friday, 27 January, 2017. The meeting was also attended by Amin Awad, UNHCR’s director for the Middle East and North Africa and Dren Zeka, chief political advisor to Minister Edita Tahiri.
Minister Edita Tahiri, has discussed with former Foreign Minister of Sudan, Mr. Ismail all relevant arguments for independence, asking on this basis Sudan to recognize the state of Kosovo. Minister Tahiri, said that Kosovo’s independence is in accordance with international law, and this legal fact has been confirmed by the International Court of Justice in 2010, and that the recognition of the state of Kosovo by Sudan would be a direct contribution of this country for peace and stability in the region and Europe. She informed Mr. Ismail with the progress made in Kosovo since the declaration of independence on the strengthening of the international subjectivity of Kosovo through powerful recognitions, Kosovo’s membership in important regional and international organizations entering into the official way of Kosovo’s membership in the European Union through the Stabilisation Association Agreement with the EU. She particularly stressed that Sudan’s allies, such as Egypt and Turkey, have recognized Kosovo’s independence, and therefore Sudan should do the same.
On his part, Ambassador Ismail, said that he and his country have followed and continue to follow with interest the positive developments in Kosovo. He stressed that for the content of the meeting will inform the Government of Sudan, following a report immediately to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan. He also encouraged contacts and mutual visits to continue, saying he welcomes a visiting delegation from Kosovo to Sudan with the aim of increasing understanding of the issues discussed. He also noted that a number of NGOs from Sudan after the war in Kosovo are committed to helping improve the situation of post-conflict Kosovo.
Dr. Mustafa Osman Ismail has previously been advisor to the President of Sudan and seven years Minister of Foreign Affairs.
