Aeronautical Accident and Incident Investigations Commission signs memorandum of agreement with UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch

March 11, 2010

Prishtina, 11 March 2010

The Aeronautical Accident and Incident Investigations Commission (AAIIC) was established last year and functions within, but independent from, the Office of the Prime Minister. The main task of the AAIIC is to advance civil aviation safety and to investigate aviation accidents or incidents.

The Chairman of the AAIIC, Kreshnik Gashi, and the UK Chief Inspector of Air Accidents, David King, signed a memorandum of agreement, following several months of activities towards this end.

This agreement satisfies the legal framework foreseen by the Law on Civil Aviation, as the law stipulates that there must be a contract signed with a professional and credible authority for accident investigation services. According to the agreement, these services are to be undertaken by the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), which is considered a highly prestigious institution in this field.

This agreement also allows AAIIC members, as part of their training, to participate in the investigation of air accidents carried out by the UK AAIB. According to the agreement, air accident and incident investigation services will be provided to the AAIIC free of charge, which means that this agreement does not foresee additional expenditures from the Prime Minister’s Office.

On behalf of the Government, the AAIIC especially thanked the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch for their cooperation and assistance, and especially for the signing of the memorandum of agreement.
