The Guideline on Standard Operating Procedures for Radiology Detection and Treatment has been signed

Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, Valdet Hoxha, who also is the National Coordinator for Integrated Border Management (IBM), together with the Chief Executive of the Kosovo Agency for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety, Mr. Bekir Mezelxhiu, signed today at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, “The Guideline on Standard Operating Procedures for Radiology Detection and Treatment”.

Deputy Minister Hoxha and Mr. Mezelxhiu, after signing this guideline thanked the working group who worked on drafting this document, at the same time they also thanked the Embassy of the United States for supporting, which through the Border Security (EXBS) program helped in drafting of this document that is of a vital importance for country’s security.

Deputy Minister Hoxha and Mr.Mezelxhiu in front of IBM authorities argued the importance of this act, explaining that signing of this guideline helps on documenting the process that officials of Border Police and Kosovo Customs will use to identify all radioactive materials passing through the cross border point; the process that shall be used for determining legality of radioactive substances that have been detected; as well as the appropriate response of the personnel associated with illegal cross border shipments.
This guideline drafted aims improving the ability of the staff members of the Border Police and Kosovo Customs, to scan people and transportation means for radioactive materials which are out of regulatory control, in an effort to prevent the smuggling and trafficking of these goods. This guideline also provides guidance on the use of radiation detection equipment, used at cross borders in Kosovo, in order to scan all import and export traffic, for loads with radioactive material.
