Chairman of the Government Commission on Missing Persons, Prenkë Gjetaj, accompanied by his colleagues from the Unit of Government Commission and the Department of Forensic Medicine, hosted in a work meeting the Ambassador of Kingdom of Belgium, in Sofia, non-resident for Kosovo, Anick Van Calster, accompanied by the Chief of the Diplomatic Office of the Kingdom of Belgium in Prishtina, Pascal Gregoire and Deputy Chief of the Diplomatic Office of Belgium, Jean Francois Brackman.
During the meting, the Chairman of the Government Commission on Missing Persons, Prenkë Gjetaj, thanked the Ambassador Calster, for the generous moral and material support that the Kingdom of Belgium is consistently providing in the important process of resolving the fate of missing persons during the period of war.
Chairman Gjetaj, informed the participants on the overall developments on the process of resolving the issue of missing persons, re-emphasizing the institutional commitment and dedication of the Republic of Kosovo in resolving the fate of all missing persons. With special emphasis, during the meeting, were discussed the developments in the Rudnice-Rashka case, respectively the work that is being conducted in this location, as well as the commitment of the competent institutions of the Republic of Kosovo, to conduct ‘the Rashka case’ in an appropriate professional manner. In this case, it was highly appreciated the continuous support and interest of the Kingdom of Belgium.
According to Mr. Gjetaj, ‘on the upcoming days we expect to complete the professional work on the first location, within the area of the mass grave in Rudnice, in order to commence assessment excavations in two other locations in that area. Also, it is important that the samples from the exhumed remains, be sent as soon as possible for identification through DNA analysis, in the laboratories of the International Commission on Missing Persons’.
During the meeting, Ambassador Anick Van Calster, expressed her appreciation for the continued cooperation with the Government Commission of the Republic of Kosovo on Missing Persons, praising the work and commitment in this humane and noble mission of the Government Commission and the Kosovo institutions in general, and also expressed willingness for further support of the Kingdom of Belgium in this process of vital importance for the families and the society in general.
Also during the meeting was discussed the engagement of Department of Forensic Medicine, namely the Government’s Commission on Missing Persons, in compiling of the Central Registry on Missing Persons, and the possibility for interstate exchange of experiences between countries that went through similar tragedies, in a joint effort for addressing and proper treatment of the issues of missing persons.
