The Government of the Republic of Kosovo held its regular meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi and discussed and approved the analysis and recommendations from the Security Sector Strategic Review in Kosovo.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi highly assessed the work done in reviewing the security sector in Kosovo. The Prime minister went on to say:
“Following a proposal by the Security Sector Strategic Review Steering Committee, the Kosovo Security Council approved in yesterday’s meeting the analysis on the Security Sector Strategic Review. This is an analysis and a comprehensive study done by the institutions of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo during a two-year process. The Security Sector Strategic Review process has adopted an inclusive and transparent approach that involved all the institutions of the Government in order to align and empower the security institutions in Kosovo in line with Euro-Atlantic principles and the best international practice.
During this period there has been a comprehensive research in all security aspects to identify the real needs of our state and our people and to define roles and capacities of each and every institution in the field of security in order to create a sector that is effective, efficient and coordinated to face security challenges in the country and to guarantee:
1. Taking over of responsibility for our security and our country;
2. Continuation of Euro-Atlantic integration of the Security Structures of the Republic of Kosovo; and
3. Ensuring of peace and stability in Kosovo and the region.
An analysis deriving from this process defines the roles of every security institution in Kosovo in an effort to improve the living conditions of our citizens under a motto that a secure Kosovo integrated in Euro-Atlantic structures is a factor of stability and guarantor of peace and security in and out of the country and that it will help improve conditions for economic development and enhance investment opportunities in the countries.
The Republic of Kosovo is committed to being a partner in building peace, security, regional stability and economic prosperity. In this aspect, the most substantial changes recommended relate to the Ministry of Security Force and the Kosovo Security Force.
As you are informed, and as we stated on 17th February this year, we are deciding today to transform the Kosovo Security Force into the Kosovo Armed Forces and as a result its mission, tasks, structure and size will change accordingly and the Ministry of Kosovo Security Force into the Kosovo Defence Ministry.
“This benefits the country and all our citizens, regardless of their ethnic or religious background or political orientation. This is to the benefit of the entire region without any discrimination. It is in the interest of Euro-Atlantic integration processes and it shows our commitment that Kosovo is ready to transform and to produce more security and to be a guarantor of its security and based on our further steps to be a relevant regional and also global security factor,” said Prime Minister, Hashim Thaçi.
Further on, Minister Agim Çeku presented the recommendations from the Security Sector Strategic Review that were unanimously approved by the Government of Kosovo.
