Prishtina, 17 June 2011

Today, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Hajredin Kuçi met representatives of the War Societies, with whom he discussed progress in approving a law for categories deriving from the war. Mr. Kuçi thanked the Government and War Societies for cooperating in amending and realizing their legal and reasonable requests.

“Last year, the Government of the Republic of Kosovo processed the Law on the Values of the War, including the issue of families of martyrs, invalids, civil victims and missing persons, and on this basis, it was approved in the Kosovo Parliament in principle, but because of the dissolution of Parliament, it was returned to the Government”, said Mr. Kuçi. He added that, “it was in the Legislative Strategy, and we have worked carefully on the draft which was returned. We coordinated with the societies continually and we have concluded that the law is now in its final draft, and in the next Government meeting, at the start of next week, it will be processed for the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo”.

In addition, Mr. Kuçi stated that this is a law that recognizes and guarantees the rights of veterans, families of martyrs, invalids and civilian victims. It is a law that recognizes and guarantees the justice of the KLA war and it is a law which guarantees benefits, not just in the material sense. The Kosovo Government is committed that this category which gave so much for Kosovo’s freedom and independence, live in dignity in the new state of Kosovo, said Mr. Kuçi.

“We are working hard so that this category is an integrated part of society, but at the same time we are working hard to give them equal opportunities to participate in Kosovo’s development, construction, freedom and independence”, said the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice, Hajredin Kuçi and he expressed his conviction that the Kosovo Parliament would quickly approve the law and start its implementation.

On behalf of the War Societies, Xhavit Jashari said this was one of a series of meetings in cooperation with the Government regarding approval of the law. Mr. Jashari said that the law on the values of the war recognized the KLA war and all benefits for those categories deriving from the war.
