The message of the Prime Minister of the Government of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, on the occasion of the 18th anniversary of the Constitutional Statement, reads as follows:
In the course of the efforts for freedom and political emancipation of the people of Kosovo, the document of the Constitutional Statement of the 2nd of July 1990 is a proof of persistence by the members of the then Assembly of Kosovo to express the will of our people for independence.
This date has become an important part in the calendar of the events that marked our recent history, as a warning that the people of Kosovo did not agree with the status of an autonomous province and the downsizing of its role one year before, but on the contrary it was mature to openly declare the will to be equal with the others.
The organizing of the people of Kosovo in the civilian resistance and the war of the Kosovo Liberation Army won the support of the democratic world that led to the liberation of Kosovo. The political will of the people of Kosovo sublimed on 17 February 2008 when the free and democratic Kosovo declared its independence, which has been internationally recognized by most of the powerful states in the world.
On the occasion of the 18th anniversary of this important event, we thank all the members of the then Assembly of Kosovo for the announcement of the Constitutional Statement. Kosovo has its own Constitution today and the state institutions that guarantee a safe perspective towards Euro-Atlantic institutions.
