Pristina, February 1, 2024

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosova, Albin Kurti, organized a reception in honor of the ambassador of Great Britain in Kosova, Nicholas Abbott, on the occasion of the end of his mandate.

In his speech, Prime Minister Kurti said that “The friendship between Ambassador Abbott and myself represents only a tiny fraction of the enduring friendship between our two countries “.

He thanked the ambassador for his work, friendship and dedication, and emphasized the always unwavering support of the United Kingdom towards Kosova.

Among many others, at this reception were also present ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions in our country, MPs, ministers and deputy ministers of the government.

Prime Minister’s Kurti full speech:

Ambassador Nicholas Abbott, British Ambassador to Kosova, dear Nick,

Excellency ambassadors and representatives of diplomatic missions in our country,

Dear members of parliament and ministers and deputy ministers of the government,

Soldiers and officers, dear guests, ladies and gentleman,

It is bittersweet to welcome you tonight. Those who serve in Kosova as members of the diplomatic corps become friends of the country. And I believe that, as diplomats, all of you understand how seriously we treat friendship.

Of course, the friendship between Ambassador Abbott and myself represents only a tiny fraction of the enduring friendship between our two countries. The UK and Kosova were already friends, long before we assumed our current roles. And they will remain friends long after. In a world where there is much change, it is reassuring to know that some things will endure. The UK’s support gives us reassurance: no matter which party is in power there, the support here for Kosova’s democracy, always remains steadfast.

Ambassador Abbott’s next position will be again in Southeast Europe. This will be his most challenging diplomatic posting because he’ll have to claim to like both places equally. In case of an otherwise unfortunate event, we all here pledge not to judge you for it. Your name is Abbott, but not Saint, so, we are forgiving.

Ambassador Abbott has something in common with the Brits who have played an important part in my life, namely that they are from Manchester. Here, he joins the ranks of some very famous bands originating from the city, such as Joy Division, Stone Roses, Oasis, The Fall and The Smiths. Of course, they provide different company. Noel Gallagher never came to my office to discuss the taking of office of the mayors in the north – several times. But we live in strange times, so I would not exclude the possibility.

But as admirer of British music, we can always send Kate Bush’s song “Be Kind to My Mistakes” to one another.

Joking aside, our ability to be light-hearted with one another is a testament to mutual respect during these years of working together.

And for the sequel to this speech, we will have to wait until next year, when we will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the ambassador joining the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. So, my office will be accepting notes and suggestions for jokes.

Ambassador Abbott, dear Nick, thank you for your work, friendship and dedication. Enjoy the evening and cheers to you all!
