Prime Minister Kurti at the inauguration of the Stanovc-Vushtrri Entrance segment: “Pristina – Mitrovica road is being built”

Vushtrri, 20 December 2024

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Minister of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure, Liburn Aliu, Deputy Ministers Hysen Durmishi and Jeton Raka, participated in the inauguration of the Stanovc – Vushtrri Entrance segment, the National Road N2 Prishtina – Mitrovica.

The Prishtina – Mitrovica road project began in 2009, but the economic operator had to be replaced to ensure progress.

The contract for this Stanovc-Vushtrri Entrance segment was signed at the end of February this year, and in ten months, the road with a length of 5.5 kilometers has been inaugurated. It passes through the settlements of Lumi i Madh, Dumnica e Poshtme, Maxhunaj, Pestovë, Samadrexhë, Sfaraqak and Nedakovc, featuring three underpasses, one pedestrian underpass and a bridge. Meanwhile, work is continuing on another important segment, Smrekovnicë – Mitrovica, which is 5 kilometers long and will cost around 15 million Euro.

The rehabilitation from a two-lane road to a four-lane one, with drainage systems along its entire length, pedestrian sidewalks in residential and business areas, improvements to the water supply network, sewage systems and the electrical grid, will lead to safer and faster traffic, quicker movement and transport of goods and services for businesses and farmers and greater development opportunities for the northern part of Kosovo, including the cities of Vushtrri, Mitrovica and beyond.

“Congratulations to everyone; this is a great collective achievement. The Prishtina – Mitrovica road is one that the state of Kosovo owed greatly to Prishtina, Vushtrri, Mitrovica, and all the surrounding villages, which have long been delayed in reaching Prishtina”, added the Prime Minister, extending his congratulations to the citizens and thanking the Minister, Deputy Ministers and the staff of the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure.

Prime Minister Kurti’s full speech:

Honourable citizens,
Dear media employees,

The Prishtina – Mitrovica road is being built. It began in 2009, meaning it is almost as old as the declaration of Kosovo’s independence. However, it was necessary to replace the economic operator to ensure progress.

I thank Minister Liburn Aliu, Deputy Minister Hysen Durmishi and the entire staff of the Ministry of Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure for their work.

This segment was signed as a contract at the end of February, and within ten months, we are inaugurating it with a length of nearly 5.5 kilometers. Another very important segment remains, which is approximately 5 kilometers long, from Smrekovnicë to Mitrovica, and it will cost around 15 million Euro.

Expropriations have been carried out precisely and fairly. Sidewalks, drainage systems, water supply and sewage pipes and the electrical network had to be regulated. Therefore, much work has been done, which may not be visible today. However, the Ministry, workers and economic operators have completed it, and now we have this smooth asphalt on which we can travel at an unprecedented speed.

I came here with an activist from Vetëvendosje, who is from Oshlan, and he told me that traveling from Oshlan to Prishtina in 35 minutes was previously unimaginable.

Once again, congratulations to everyone; this is a great collective achievement and the Prishtina – Mitrovica road is one that the state of Kosovo owed greatly to Prishtina, Vushtrri, Mitrovica and all the surrounding villages, which have long faced delays in reaching Prishtina. Sometimes, it felt as though they were coming from Gjakova or Peja, given the heavy traffic and the poorly maintained road, which is now no longer two lanes but four. This road has been built according to standards and includes accompanying features like underpasses and similar elements because we have done planning in addition to implementation.

In the past, unfortunately, there were attempts to implement without proper planning, which led to delays in expropriations and the work of economic operators. Now, because procedures were followed, and because road construction is not merely a matter of political will but also of engineering and science. This was successfully implemented and will continue with the next segment, Smrekovnicë – Mitrovica.

Once again, thank you very much, Minister Liburn, Deputy Minister Hysen and Deputy Minister Jeton.
