Belfast, 29 February 2024

The second day in Belfast started with a meeting of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, with the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, at the historic “Hillsborough Castle”.

In the conversation between them, Prime Minister Kurti expressed his gratitude for the continuous support of the United Kingdom for Kosovo for decades. He spoke about the challenges and opportunities that Kosovo has as a multilingual and comprehensive state. The Prime Minister emphasized the commitment and dedication of our Government for the integration of non-majority communities, especially in state institutions.

Regarding dealing with the past, Secretary Heaton-Harris said that it is important to remember the past, but also to build on it, for a better present and future, especially for the youth and new generations of who want prosperity, no matter what community they come from.

The Prime Minister mentioned the pressure and threats faced by the Serbian community in Kosovo, and especially the police officers of this community, from official Belgrade. The Prime Minister pointed out that the Serbian citizens of Kosovo want to feel safe and protected like all other citizens of the state. They cooperate with the police in the north of Kosovo to fight against organized crime and criminal activities that negatively affect their daily lives.

In the light of this discussion, but also more broadly, about the challenges that our country is constantly facing, Prime Minister Kurti expressed interest in hearing more about Northern Ireland’s experiences in bringing communities together. The parties emphasized their willingness to expand cooperation in areas such as economy, culture and technology.

At the end of the meeting, the Prime Minister thanked Secretary Heaton-Harris for the friendly conversation, shared ideas and shared experiences.

Secretary Heaton-Harris accompanied the Prime Minister on a tour of the more than two-century-old and imposing “Hillsborough Castle”, where they observed its impressive and fascinating grandeur.
