Prime Minister Kurti Receives Letter from U.S. Congressman Lawler

Prishtina, 2 October 2026

Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo Albin Kurti received a letter from U.S. Congressman Michael Lawler, a member of the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa.

Congressman Lawler, one of Kosovo’s most vocal advocates in the U.S. Congress, congratulated Prime Minister Kurti on his fourth mandate at the helm of the Government and stressed the importance of all political actors returning to negotiations in good faith to elect the President, with a view to avoiding elections.

He reiterated his full support for Kosovo’s membership in NATO, saying that “such a step would be decisive not only for Kosovo’s long-term security, but also for maintaining peace throughout the Western Balkans.”

“Partly as a result of your work towards NATO membership, I see Kosovo on the right path to becoming a strong democracy, with solid economic growth and shared prosperity. Governmental stability is key. Therefore, I hope your country will be successful in electing a new president in the coming weeks, in order to prevent another round of parliamentary elections—for the fourth time in less than two years,” he wrote.

Further in his letter, Congressman Lawler stressed the importance of national unity and cooperation among political parties, particularly following the judgment of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague on 16 September.

“Especially in light of last week’s judgment in The Hague, there is no more important moment for Kosovo’s national unity than now. I urge you to work to ensure that all political actors return to negotiations in good faith and find the consensus necessary to elect the president,” Congressman Lawler added.

He also stressed the importance of institutional stability in order to remain focused on key priorities, including advancing the close partnership with the United States.
