At the German Bundestag, the Chief Negotiator of the Republic of Kosovo with the European Union, Mr Jeton Zulfaj, met with Dr Anton Hofreiter, Chair of the Committee on European Union Affairs and Member of the Alliance 90/The Greens parliamentary group; Mr Johannes Schraps, Deputy Chair of the Committee and Member of the SPD parliamentary group; and Mr Peter Beyer, Member of the Committee and Member of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group. Mr Zulfaj was accompanied by the Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo to Germany, Mr Faruk Ajeti.
Chief Negotiator Zulfaj thanked the members of the Bundestag for Germany’s continued support for Kosovo, emphasizing the gratitude of the people of Kosovo for German solidarity and support at decisive moments in our history—from liberation and post-war reconstruction to the path towards independence, state-building and the country’s economic development.
The meeting focused on advancing Kosovo’s EU integration process. Mr Zulfaj emphasized that, almost four years after submitting its application for EU membership, Kosovo remains the only country in the region without candidate status. He called for the Bundestag’s support for the Council of the EU to request that the European Commission prepare its Opinion on Kosovo’s application this autumn.
The Chief Negotiator underlined that Germany has been and remains one of Kosovo’s most important partners and that its voice carries particular weight in EU enlargement policy. In this regard, he called for proactive engagement by German parliamentarians, including through contacts with their counterparts in other EU Member States and European political families, to help advance Kosovo’s application.
The meeting also addressed Kosovo’s democratic and economic progress, the implementation of reforms as part of the EU integration process, as well as Kosovo’s full commitment to the values of the European Union and the full alignment of the Republic of Kosovo with the EU Common Foreign and Security Policy.
Chief Negotiator Zulfaj thanked the German parliamentarians for the opportunity to meet and for Germany’s continued support.
