At the request of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, the National Council for Economy and Investment held its latest meeting today with economic chambers and manufacturing businesses regarding the liberalization of the electricity market.
Present at the meeting were the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti; Acting Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli; Acting Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, Rozeta Hajdari; Chair of the Board of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO), Ymer Fejzullahu; Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK), Gramoz Hashani; as well as representatives of domestic producers and economic chambers.
Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that the Government of the Republic of Kosovo will stand by producers in every challenge arising from this process. Minister Rizvanolli reiterated that the Ministry of Economy and the Government of Kosovo will continue their intensive communication and cooperation with businesses, particularly producers, to support them in facing these challenges.
As the next concrete step, the parties agreed to organize a joint meeting between electricity suppliers in Kosovo and companies that are expected to enter the open market where parties will exchange practical information, foster competition, and ensure businesses are well-informed so they can make the most favorable choices.
In his remarks, ERO Board Chair Fejzullahu reported that since the meeting held on May 19, 2025, the ERO has been in communication with licensed suppliers, six of whom have confirmed they are active, and five have already submitted supply offers to various enterprises. ERO also noted an increase in interest from regional companies seeking to offer electricity in Kosovo, which has brought the number of licensed electricity supply companies to 21.
A representative of the SharrCem company shared their company’s experience operating in the open energy market since 2017—an experience that proved highly valuable for the companies now entering the market.
KEK’s Acting CEO, Gramoz Hashani, explained the option of the supplier of last resort for companies that are unable to secure supply contracts prior to entering the open market. He informed participants that companies unable to obtain regular supply contracts must sign a contract with KEK in order to benefit from this option provided by the legislation.
