Prime Minister Kurti Pays Tribute at the Memorial for Police Officers Fallen in the Line of Duty in Honor of Their Service and Sacrifice for the Country

Prishtina, 26 July 2025

On the Memorial Day of Police Officers Fallen in the Line of Duty, the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, accompanied by the Acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, the General Director of the Kosovo Police, Gazmend Hoxha, and other members of the government cabinet, paid tribute today at the memorial in the courtyard of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which bears the names of the police officers who fell in the line of duty, to honor their service and contribution to our country.

As he named the 24 police officers who fell in post-war Kosovo, from Lazim Rexhepi in 2001 to Muhamed Lika in 2025, the Prime Minister highlighted the names of Kosovo Heroes Enver Zymeri and Afrim Bunjaku, who fell in the line of duty while defending state sovereignty, territorial integrity, public order, the rule of law, peace, and security in the north of Kosovo.

“The Memorial Day is directly linked to the heroic fall of Enver Zymeri on 26 July 2011.Today we feel sorrow and grief, we feel longing, but at the same time we also feel pride, because the Kosovo Police is a force of around 10,000 members who stand up for our Republic and uphold the law, order, peace, and security for all citizens without distinction,” stated Prime Minister Kurti.

He added that the Kosovo Police is a multiethnic force that has often come under attack, yet has always prevailed. One of the structural attacks it faced, as Prime Minister Kurti pointed out, occurred in November 2022 when 541 uniformed officers from the Serbian community collectively resigned. However, even this did not manage to weaken the Kosovo Police, as new cadets continue to join its ranks generation after generation. Since those resignations, around 200 members from the Serbian community have joined the Kosovo Police, and today, alongside their Albanian and other uniformed colleagues, they serve our country and our citizens, he continued.

Glory to Enver Zymeri, Afrim Bunjaku, and all the Kosovo Police officers who fell in the line of duty!

Full Speech of Prime Minister Kurti:

Together with the Acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, the Director of the Police, Gazmend Hoxha, and colleagues from the Government of the Republic, we paid tribute here at the memorial of police officers fallen in the line of duty—24 in total in post-war Kosovo, from Lazim Rexhepi in 2001 to most recently, Muhamed Lika in 2025.

On this occasion, I wish to highlight our hero Enver Zymeri and also Afrim Bunjaku, who both fell in the line of duty defending state sovereignty, territorial integrity, law and order, peace, and security in the north of Kosovo. The Memorial Day is precisely linked to the heroic fall of Enver Zymeri on 26 July 2011. Today we feel pain and sorrow, we feel deep longing, but at the same time we also feel pride, because the Kosovo Police is a force of about 10,000 members who stand up for our Republic and uphold and maintain the law, order, peace, and security for all citizens without distinction.

The Kosovo Police is a multiethnic force that has often been attacked, yet has always emerged victorious. One of the structural attacks it faced occurred in November 2022, when we had 541 uniformed officers from the Serbian community who collectively resigned. But even this did not manage to harm the Kosovo Police, because new cadets continue to join its ranks generation after generation. Since their resignations, we now have around 200 members from the Serbian community who have joined the Kosovo Police and, shoulder to shoulder with their uniformed Albanian and other colleagues, serve our country and our citizens.

Glory to Enver Zymeri, Afrim Bunjaku, and all the Kosovo Police officers who fell in the line of duty!
