“Afrim Bunjaku held the rank of sergeant in the Kosovo Police, but today he holds the rank of Hero of Kosovo. The rank of Hero is the highest that any citizen of the Republic or state official can receive. At the same time, it is the only rank that cannot be downgraded. Therefore, the Hero of Kosovo, Afrim Bunjaku, is remembered today by our entire people, by every state official, in honor and memory of his sacrifice for the Republic of Kosovo, its territorial integrity, and state sovereignty,” said Prime Minister Kurti.
Following the tribute, he and members of the government cabinet, along with the Police Director, were welcomed by the Bunjaku family at their home.
Afrim Bunjaku fell in the line of duty on September 24, 2023, in Banjska, Zveçan, during an encounter with Serbia’s paramilitary and terrorist groups, in defense of sovereignty, constitutional order, security, and peace.
Glory to Afrim and all police officers who fell in the line of duty!
Full Speech by Prime Minister Kurti:
July 26 marks the Memorial Day of Kosovo Police Officers Fallen in the Line of Duty. After paying our respects at the joint memorial bearing the names of 24 officers who were killed in post-war Kosovo while serving constitutional order, legality, peace, and public safety, we have come here to the grave of Afrim Bunjaku to pay tribute, to meet with his family—this sergeant who fell heroically in Banjska, Zveçan. In two months, it will be two years since his heroic fall. After this, we will also visit the grave and the site of the fall of Enver Zymeri, because all these police officers who dedicated their lives to the service of Kosovo and its citizens, and who sacrificed themselves in defense of our country and peace, deserve our full respect and must be remembered and honored continuously. But today is a special day for them—July 26, the Memorial Day of Police Officers Fallen in the Line of Duty.
Afrim Bunjaku held the rank of sergeant in the Kosovo Police, but today he holds the rank of Hero of Kosovo. The rank of Hero is the highest that a citizen of the Republic and a state official can receive. It is also the only rank that cannot be downgraded. Therefore, the Hero of Kosovo, Afrim Bunjaku, is remembered today by our entire people, by every state official, in honor and memory of his sacrifice for the Republic of Kosovo, for its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
