“Universities, in addition to study spaces, are places where minds are formed and ideas are cultivated,” said Prime Minister Kurti.

Among the key priorities, as the Prime Minister emphasized, is the support and commitment of the Government of the Republic, for the pupils and students of our country, offering scholarships for students with a high average grade, for studies inside and outside the country, for students from communities and with abilities limited, as well as scholarships for girls in the STEM field, as well as exemption from tuition fees for 43 thousand students of public universities in the country.

“The quality of higher education in Kosovo is high among the priorities of our Government”, said the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Kurti together with Minister Nagavci and Minister Sveçla, accompanied by the Mayor of Mitrovica, Bedri Hamza and the Rector of the University of Mitrovica, Nurten Deva, continued with the ribbon cutting ceremony and visited the new spaces of the Canteen and Dormitory.

Prime Minister Kurti’s complete speech:

The honorable Mr. Xhelal Sveçla, Minister of Internal Affairs,
Honorable Ms. Arbërie Nagavci, Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation,
Honorable Taulant Kelmendi, Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation,
The honorable Mr. Bedri Hamza, Mayor of the Municipality of Mitrovica,
Honorable Mrs. Nurten Deva, Acting Rector of “Isa Boletini” University in Mitrovica,
Dear members of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, Mrs. Fejza and Mr. Muja,
Dear students, academic staff,
Dear administrative workers,
Dear soldiers, officers and police,
Ladies and gentleman,

I am honored to be here with you today to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the University of Mitrovica, which bears the name of the indomitable insurgent and leader of the fighters for the liberation of the Albanian people, Isa Boletini.

This institution, which in October of this year turns 63 years since its establishment as a Technical High School, is proof of the determination of our people for education. From the Technical High School founded in 1961 in Mitrovica, after 13 years, in 1974 the Faculty of Mining and Metallurgy was founded. This Faculty raised engineering cadres, who were engaged in the industry and economy of Kosovo, the power plant of Kosovo and the ore-metallurgical “Trepça”.

Two weeks ago I was in Mitrovica, on Miner’s Day, to remember the great miners’ strike, and to honor the roots of our Republic. Today I am coming from the honors we did in Prekaz, on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the Epic of the Liberation Army of Kosovo. 35 years after the strike, 25 years after the liberation of our country, we are working together and diligently to promote development with education and welfare with development.

Dear attendees,

The history of our country is closely connected with the resistance, with the students, with the university. Our first University of Pristina has produced the professional, cultural and political elites that have contributed to the efforts of the people of Kosovo for liberation and for the creation of the Republic of Kosovo, and of course this shows how important education is for our country.

The University of Mitrovica “Isa Boletini”, academic units, staff and students continue to work for an environment that values critical thinking, scientific creativity and professional and academic development.
Universities, in addition to being study spaces, are places where minds are formed and ideas are cultivated. So, they are indicators of commitment to education as a cornerstone of social progress. These objects, these spaces, which we are inaugurating together today, are concrete investments for a modern study and research environment for the two thousand students of this University. I am happy that the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, the relevant ministries are contributing to increasing the capacities of the University.

The university campus, which began to be built in 2013, is being finalized today with the fourth phase of investment by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, worth over 6 million euros, out of the total investment value of over 20 million euros. The canteen has a space of 2920 square meters, where up to 500 students can be fed simultaneously. While the dormitory with a space of 7896 square meters can accommodate 279 students.

I thank all those who have worked diligently and attentively on these projects, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, the university staff and all the joint teams involved in the construction and the arrangement of these spaces.

The quality of higher education in Kosovo is high among the priorities of our Government. Therefore, we are paying particular attention to the modernization of higher education and the establishment of adequate criteria, both for raising and maintaining quality, because quality should be a solid process, not a one-time event.

The support and commitment of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo to pupils and students remains unstoppable. We have made education at the public high level free, in which case 43 thousand students of public universities throughout Kosovo have been exempted from paying for their studies. We have awarded and are awarding scholarships for high average grades, for studies at home and abroad, for students from non-majority communities and for those with disabilities, as well as scholarships for girls in STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. So, we are committed to creating optimal conditions for you, for students of all levels, to learn as much as possible and move forward as quickly as possible.

Dear students,

In the coming years, let us continue to work on the principles that unite us. I encourage you to study and engage strongly with your professors, for academic and professional achievement. The knowledge you gain here, your individual and professional development, contributes to your future life and the future of our Republic.

Congratulations on the anniversary of the University! My congratulations to the university campus and I wish you much success and prosperity in the future!

Thank you.
