The Government of the Republic of Kosovo is committed to transformative action for sustainable development

Prishtina, 20 October 2023

Responding to the call for renewed global action, the Government of the Republic of Kosovo pledges seven years of accelerated and transformative action to fulfill the promise of sustainable development. These commitments are in line with the National Development Strategy 2030 (SKZH) and the National Development Plan, approved in March 2023, which describes the Government’s vision for sustainable development and the realization of the 2030 Agenda.

Last month, the United Nations Secretary-General called on world leaders to invest in development “like never before” and make meaningful progress in accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). His call came at a critical time, as global crises are threatening the achievement of global goals by 2030.

The Government’s transformative commitments will focus on four key policy priorities:

• Poverty Reduction: The government is committed to reducing the poverty rate by 6% by 2027, through quality health services and reform of the social assistance scheme.

• Renewable energy: The government aims to increase renewable energy capacity from 279 MW to 1,600 MW by 2030, including expanding battery storage capacity to at least 170 MW in the national electricity grid.

• Digital transformation: By 2027, Kosovo aims to digitize 65% of public services for citizens and businesses, with the aim of training 80% of the population with basic digital skills by 2030

• Education Transformation: Kosovo is determined to undertake important reforms in the education system, allocating 4-6% of GDP and 15-20% of public expenditures for education until 2027. This is consistent with the increase in the rate of inclusion in early childhood education, especially for children with special needs, as well as increasing the enrollment rate of marginalized children in mandatory and upper secondary education.

To support these commitments, the Government is making appropriate development mechanisms, aiming to establish an Accelerator Development Fund (SDGs) as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Platform.

These pledges reflect Kosovo’s unwavering commitment to creating an equal, stable, and more prosperous society
