Prishtina, 15 October 2010
Honorable students,
Honorable professors,
Ladies and gentlemen,
It is a special pleasure to be here with you today and talk about important topics for our country, the Republic of Kosovo.
The Government of the Republic of Kosovo will continue to consider education and investing in education as one of its key priorities also in the future, because we consider that it is exactly a developed education system that is the best foundation for a sustainable economic development.
Since, we are now at the Mining and Metallurgic Faculty, I will focus on the steps that we as Government have taken, and the progress we have achieved, in the fields of economy, trade, and overall economic development.
Kosovo has maintained its growth trend also this year – since the declaration of independence this growth rate has approximately been around 5%. Both public and private investments have also marked an increase. About €400 million has been invested in capital projects during 2009 aiming at improving the existing infrastructure and facilitating trade cooperation in the region and beyond.
The 2020-2013 fiscal package foresees investments in a value amounting to €2.4 billion in the priority sectors of the Government’s program, which mainly focus on the road infrastructure, energy sector and building of human capacities.
The economic growth marked over the last two years is to a large extent attributed to the growth and development of the private sector and also capital public investments. Figures from a recent joint survey by the KBA (Kosovo Business Alliance) and the Ministry of Labor show that since 2009, employment in private enterprises in Kosovo has increased by 12.6%, which is a very encouraging trend and shows concrete results. At the same time, this study shows that the approximate salaries in these enterprises in 2009 increased by 18.2%.
The Government of the Republic of Kosovo has proved to be open towards private investment and capable of leading many transparent processes with regards to the involvement of the private sector in the state infrastructure.
As a result of such a transparent and attentive process in the concession of the Prishtina Airport and hiring of one of the biggest and well known world company to build the first highway in Kosovo, we have built our credibility amongst big investors. The Government of Kosovo, through the public and private partnership will further increase the level of international investments.
The privatization of the PTK, the construction of the Kosova e Re power plant, of the Zhur hydro power plant and of the energy distribution and supply services will attract powerful investors and will allow a more favorable climate for the private business.
Honorable students,
I am here to underline that the allocation of 18 hectares is an encouragement for me and the Government of Kosovo to decide about opening of the new Mitrovica University. Therefore, Mitrovica is going to have the new premises and the new university.
