The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, welcomed the Nobel laureate, Dr. Denis Mukwege.

Thanking him for his visit to Kosovo, the prime minister expressed his deep gratitude for the Nobel laureate’s support for our survivors of wartime sexual violence.

The Prime Minister added that the government is working closely with the institutions and actors of the civil society regarding the processes of transitional justice, in particular with the organizations of women and survivors of sexual violence.

He emphasized that the Institute for the Documentation of War Crimes has already been established and the first National Strategy for Transitional Justice has been approved. Also, the Governmental Commission for the Recognition of the Status of Survivors of Sexual Violence during the War, since 2018, has been receiving applications from survivors with guaranteed safe handling of information, where over 2,000 applications have so far arrived. The Prime Minister also highlighted that we have increased the capacity to deal with war crimes by increasing the number of police investigators.

Prime Minister Kurti expressed gratitude for the support of Dr. Mukwege in the joint activity with our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the settings of the installation “Thinking of You”, by the artist Alketa Xhafa, in the month of June, in The Hague.

Dr. Mukwege congratulated the Republic of Kosovo and its institutions for the cooperation with civil society and the work being done in transitional justice.

Dr. Denis Mukwege is a human rights advocate. Together with activist Yazidi Nadia Murad, Dr. Mukwege received the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for his “efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict”. He has also received numerous awards for his work, including the UN Human Rights Prize (2008), the Right to Livelihood Prize (2013) and the European Parliament’s Sakharov Prize (2014).
