The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli and the Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Luan Dalipi, today welcomed the Chief Executive of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), Alice Albright, accompanied by the American Ambassador to Kosovo , Jeffrey Hovenier.
Honored by her visit to Kosovo, Prime Minister Kurti thanked Mrs. Albright for the cooperation so far and expressed his readiness for its continuation towards the implementation of the Compact Program as soon as possible within the framework of the agreement signed between the Government of the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America in July of this year.
In addition to the ratification in the Assembly with the support of 89 deputies in less than a day after the signing, at the 100th meeting of the Government, two working groups have been established to serve the implementation of the agreement. Thus, Kosovo for the first time is creating its first capacity for battery storage of electricity, and is investing in the development of new skills in the energy sector, preparing for the just energy transition.
The agreement with MCC for the Compact Program comes at a critical time. The Republic of Kosovo aims for an export-oriented economy and an increase in renewable energy capacities. For both of these, the Compact Program and the MCC are very important, said Prime Minister Kurti, among other things.
The Chief Executive of the MCC, Alice Albright expressed her gratitude for the quick ratification of the agreement in the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo and gave full readiness for close cooperation towards its implementation as soon as possible. She said that the Compact Program is a long-term project for Kosovo, with priority for the MCC itself.
This meeting took place in the framework of the visit of Mrs. Albright in Kosovo. Her visit comes after the signing of the agreement for the Compact Program between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America, represented by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), worth 236.7 million US dollars. It constitutes the largest and most innovative investment in the energy sector in Kosovo to date and will contribute to the country’s energy security.
The Compact Program includes three projects:
1. Energy reserves and arbitration of 340 MWh,
2. The development of the workforce, with special emphasis on the inclusion of women in the energy sector, as well as
3. The American Development Catalyst Institution project, which aims to promote private sector financing from the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) of the United States in Kosovo.
Investments of the Compact Program will be owned by the Republic of Kosovo and mark one of the most important development cooperations between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America.
