The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, hosted Sonja Biserko, the founder and president of the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Serbia. Together with him at the meeting were Nenad Canak, Serbian politician, co-founder and former leader of the center-left party, League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina, as well as Mark Baskin, senior adviser of the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue.
The situation and developments in the Western Balkans region, the will and the chances for integration in the EU and NATO, and in particular the relations between Kosovo and Serbia, history and current affairs, as well as perspectives for the future, were discussed.
During the meeting, Biserko and Çanak informed the prime minister that there is talk that official Belgrade is planning the relocation of Kosovo Serbs, especially those from the north, to Sanxhak, where, as they say, houses and apartments are being built for them. They appealed to Prime Minister Kurti to try to prevent such a scenario.
Prime Minister Kurti reiterated the importance of democracy, the rule of law and equality for all citizens of Kosovo and especially the involvement of the Serbian community in all aspects of the economy and society.
Further, the Prime Minister informed his guests about the rights enjoyed by the non-majority communities in the Republic of Kosovo, as well as the efforts that the Government is making to increase opportunities for these communities in many areas such as education, employment and their security.
Prime Minister Kurti thanked them for their commitment to building bridges of peace and cooperation and good neighborly relations within the region, these European principles which are embraced and embodied in our Republic.
