Prishtina, 15 April 2024
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurit, received the Vice President of the Vital Voices organization from Washington D.C., Manira Alva, in a meeting today.
Vital Voices is an organization that for more than 25 years has invested in women leaders, identifying those with vision and courage to change and make the vision a reality.
Prime Minister Kurti spoke about the vision of the Government and the concrete actions taken by the Government to empower girls and women towards equality, starting from representation in the government cabinet to employment policies for women, support for women entrepreneurs, scholarships for girls and women in the STEM fields, which have directly influenced the increase in the participation of girls and women in these fields of study to 50%, allowances for expectant mothers and children, and so on. He emphasized that the electoral victory 3 years ago, in the February 2021 elections, was the result of the commitment and high participation of women, youth and the diaspora. Therefore, the political engagement of women is necessary for successful reforms, for justice, peace and sustainable development, it was said at the meeting.
Furthermore, the current global challenges of security and peace in the world, which many women and children face, are also mentioned. In this context, the importance of support mechanisms for women, for the sustainability of participation in political life and the creation of support and protection networks, was underlined, so that women and girls are not the first to suffer or leave positions in moments of crisis and difficulties.
Ms. Alva expressed her willingness to support the progressive agenda for equality of the Government and Prime Minister Kurti through Vital Voices programs in human rights, economic opportunities and public policy leadership for women and girls. She emphasized that online attacks against women and girls have been increasing all over the world, on platforms that are mainly owned and managed by men, so Kosovo’s measures, which aim to engage girls in STEM, will have a direct impact in improving the content of online platforms.
Gratitude was also expressed for the commitment of the Government and Prime Minister Kurti for equality, as he emphasized that the equality agenda cannot succeed without the full commitment of men in society in general and men in leadership positions in particular. She added that the model that the Government of Kosovo presents is the model that should be expanded and applied by others in the region and beyond.
In this meeting, the head of the Parliamentary Group of the VETËVENDSOSJE! Movement, Mimoza Kusari Lila, was also present.
