Immediately after the end of the war in 1999, Mr. Rand Engel came to Kosovo and founded the organization “Balkan Sunflowers Kosova” that aimed to establish learning centers but also develop infrastructure projects and training programs.
In an evocative meeting, the Prime Minister recalled the work, commitment and extraordinary contribution of Mr. Engel in Kosovo.
They remembered the first meeting more than two decades ago when the Prime Minister had just come out of prison and was at the beginning of his political activism. The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude in particular for the establishment of learning centers that have helped children and marginalized groups. “When we started paying the allowances for mothers and newborn children, the learning centers played a crucial role. They provided support to women who did not have access to the Internet by helping them register for the benefits offered. Similarly, when we announced funding for families to purchase textbooks and school supplies at the beginning of the 2023-2024 academic year, it was the learning centers that helped families in need to access the funding,” the Prime Minister said.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo for the valuable work and contribution of Mr. Engel and Balkan Sunflower in teaching children and young people and increasing activism among them.
