Prishtina, July the 21st 2022
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosova, Albin Kurti, accompanied by the Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu and the former Ombudsman, Sami Kurteshi, welcomed the representatives of civil society organizations to a meeting on the occasion of the publication of the Civil Society Report on Human Rights in Kosova 2021.
The report addresses over 100 recommendations for institutions. The meeting addressed the need for their implementation through institutional reforms.
Prime Minister Kurti thanked them for the report and appreciated the commitment of civil society for the supervisory role in the field of human rights in Kosovo and emphasized that the respect and protection of human rights are not only formal constitutional obligations of him and the Government, but are the essence of philosophical and human conviction.
Today, we cannot and should not talk about quantitative indicators for measuring the realization of human rights, but about rooted human values that are closely related to the experience and conviction of people in Kosovo, he said.
Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that human rights are an inseparable part of the existence of the state of law and liberal democracy. He emphasized that in the essence of a state of law, guided by the idea of liberal democracy, “rights” are the essence of a state’s existence, because human rights constitute the essence of the concepts of the state of law and liberal democracy, despite illiberal democracies in authoritarian countries that basically do not have human rights but representation through elections.
The Minister of Justice Albulena Haxhiu thanked the civil society for the commitment, correct and valuable cooperation in various fields for the improvement and strengthening of the justice system.
Civil society representatives appreciated the Government’s commitment to the vetting process and thanked the Ministry of Justice for the space created for civil society in the drafting of vetting documents.
Both the Prime Minister and Minister Haxhiu, as well as representatives of civil society, emphasized the need for deepening and intensifying cooperation in the field of human rights in the future.
