January 23, 2009

Prishtina, 23.01.2009

Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of KosovoRamë Manaj took part in a meeting for a general presentation by EULEX about operations for missing persons.

Deputy Prime Minister Manaj addressed the meeting with a speech.

The following are some excerpts from Deputy Prime MinisterManaj’s speech at the meeting.

I am honored, in the name of the Government of the Republic of Kosovo, to express my consideration and thanks for all the work done to shed light on the fate of the missing as an issue which is not only emotional and painful, but also human and political.

This question which has regional dimensions still remains as an anxiety for all of us, the citizens of Kosovo and beyond and everyone’s contribution should be coordinated in order to reveal the fate of all missing persons.

We value highly the commitment and contribution up to now of the international mission in Kosovo and especially, the International Commission for Missing Persons (ICMP), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Office for Missing Persons and Legal Medicine and with associations of families of the missing.

The Government of the Republic of Kosovo, aware that the issue is complex and with political dimensions, is building new administrative capacities and giving new input to this issue and at the same time, in complete cooperation with all the actors involved, is drafting a Law on Missing Persons.
Let this meeting serve as additional motivation contributing towards finding new possibilities; which are not lacking, which are not without a real address, which has been mentioned many times in meetings, round-tables and organizations dedicated to this issue.

One fact cannot be contested, the address from which answers are required is clear, however it has been proven that even for human and emotional issues; the aggressor state is not ready to take on its responsibilities.

In Kosovo, even today, the institutions have expressed their readiness to cultivate a regional dialogue reflecting that solving the issue of the missing is amongst the most painful wounds from which many families suffer and from which Kosovo suffers.

This general presentation by EULEX and the operations it will undertake are a new chance to address and intensify joint activities which should result with the closing of this chapter.
