Acting Prime Minister Kurti Hosts President of the European Council Costa

Prishtina, 3 June 2026

Today, the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, hosted the President of the European Council, António Costa, as part of his visit to Kosovo, two days ahead of the European Union–Western Balkans Summit in Tivat.

Acting Prime Minister Kurti thanked President Costa for the contribution of the European Union as the largest donor to Kosovo’s development and state-building, support which Kosovo has reciprocated through the cultivation and promotion of EU values and the strengthening of institutions.

The Acting Prime Minister emphasized that Kosovo has achieved significant progress in reforms, democracy, and the economy, with improvements in the rule of law, the fight against corruption, media freedom, and electoral and liberal democracy, as well as sustainable economic growth among the fastest in the region. He assessed that the European Union remains Kosovo’s main development partner.

Acting Prime Minister Kurti stressed the Government’s commitment to reforms stemming from the Growth Plan and other pre-accession instruments, underlining the importance of obtaining candidate status.

The meeting also addressed cooperation with European Union institutions, security, and the importance of good unneighborly relations in the service of regional cooperation. Kosovo has fully aligned itself with the EU’s foreign policy, has condemned the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine in the strongest terms, and has joined all EU sanctions against Russia.

This was President Costa’s second visit to Prishtina, following the one he made in May last year.

With the progress achieved in recent years, the strengthening of the rule of law, the advancement of freedoms, the strengthening of democratic institutions, and economic development, Kosovo is ready for candidate status and the opening of accession negotiations.
