Inauguration of the N2 Prishtina–Mitrovica National Road Segment, €25 Million Investment

Vushtrri, 19 March 2026

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Dimal Basha, inaugurated in Vushtrri the completed segment of the N2 Prishtina–Mitrovica national road, a project valued at €25 million.

Recalling that the project to expand this road to four lanes had begun 17 years ago, Prime Minister Kurti noted that within the two-year deadline, a 9.6-kilometer segment had been completed.

“Let us not forget that this project started back in 2009 and was never completed because it was initially mismanaged. This €25 million investment, covering 9.6 kilometers, has been realized through cooperation between our institutions, the Saudi Fund for Development, and the OPEC Fund for International Development, for which I thank them for their valuable support and contribution,” said the Prime Minister.

In December 2024, the first part of the segment, over 5 kilometers long, from the village of Lum i Madh to the entrance of Vushtrri, was inaugurated, followed by the remainder, including the bypass, covering approximately 4.4 kilometers.

Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that the priority now is to start work on the final segment from the village of Smrekonica to Mitrovica.

“Moreover, in this new government mandate, already at the third meeting of our government, we decided to initiate the ratification process in the Assembly of Kosovo for the Loan Agreement for the Prishtina–Mitrovica high-speed road project between the Saudi Fund for Development and the Republic of Kosovo, in order to proceed as soon as possible with the remaining part of this road, which connects Prishtina with Mitrovica. We hope the Assembly will unblock this process soon and that this project will start immediately,” said Prime Minister Kurti.

Minister of Infrastructure, Dimal Basha, stated that the new road is exceptionally modern, including the bypass, which both facilitates traffic on one side and connects seven villages on the other.

Alongside the donors—the Saudi Fund for Development and the OPEC Fund for International Development—Minister Basha thanked citizens for their patience and added that with the Kurti Government, projects that had been left unfinished over the years are now being implemented. He also stressed the need for the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo to unblock its work so that the international agreement financing the final road segment from Smrekonica to Mitrovica can be ratified.

Full Speech of Prime Minister Kurti:

Good day, esteemed journalists and dear citizens,

It is a pleasure to meet you at the inauguration of this segment of the Prishtina–Mitrovica main road. The works on this project were completed within the full two-year period, demonstrating a high work pace, efficiency in execution, and, alongside these, maximum quality in implementation. Let us not forget that this project began in the distant year 2009, but was never completed due to mismanagement.

This €25 million investment, covering 9.6 kilometers, was realized through cooperation between our institutions, the Saudi Fund for Development, and the OPEC Fund for International Development, for which I sincerely thank them for their support and valuable contribution. The project has been built to high and modern standards, providing safety, development, and opportunities for all residents in the area, including the capital, Prishtina, and the municipalities of Vushtrri and Mitrovica.

The project was completed in two years and includes the expansion of the road to four lanes, the construction of a 4.4-kilometer bypass outside the existing route that passes through seven villages, and the construction of eight underpasses, three overpasses, and one bridge. This means less traffic time, greater safety, smoother traffic flow, and new connections that further unite the entire northern region of our country within the Republic of Kosovo.
Our government is committed to ensuring the best and most efficient management of public investments, guaranteeing transparency and accountability while maximizing benefits for the citizens of Kosovo.

Moreover, in this new government mandate, already at our third government meeting, we decided to initiate the ratification process in the Assembly of Kosovo for the Loan Agreement for the Prishtina–Mitrovica high-speed road project between the Saudi Fund for Development and the Republic of Kosovo, to proceed as soon as possible with the remaining segment, which connects Prishtina and Mitrovica. We hope the Assembly of Kosovo will unblock the process quickly and that this project will commence immediately.

I thank everyone who contributed to the cooperation and commitment. I also thank the economic operators and now hand over the floor to our Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Dimal Basha.
