Inauguration of renovated premises at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy

Pristina, 13 March 2026

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Minister of Health, Dr. Arben Vitia, took part in the inauguration of the renovated premises at the Institute of Pathological Anatomy.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Kurti said that the transformation, clinic after clinic and institute after institute, will continue until the fundamental and qualitative change of our public health and healthcare system. He said that, as part of this project, two laboratories have been expanded and equipped with modern equipment: the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory and the Molecular Pathology Laboratory; the pathologists’ rooms have been reorganised for more specialists, and the ancillary spaces for day-to-day work have been made functional.

The Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, said he is pleased with the work done at the Institute of Pathology, an institute of exceptional importance, because the work there also reflects on the clinicians and especially on the Oncology Clinic, so that patients are treated in the best and fastest way possible. “This year will be the year of diagnostics; investment will be made in all laboratories without distinction, starting with new technology and the digitalisation of laboratories, and of course this is of great help to clinicians and especially to patients, who will have the possibility to be diagnosed accurately so that treatment can then be successful,” said Minister Vitia.

The Director of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy, Dr. Merita Hashani, said that this is a special day because, for the first time since its construction, the first floor of this institute is taking on a completely different look through a radical transformation, achieved through institutional support and through the management of the Hospital and University Clinical Service of Kosova (HUCSK). “This transformation has created new working conditions, thereby enhancing the quality of health services at the Institute of Pathology and, in this way, this investment will help and will directly affect the well-being of citizens,” she said.

The total amount of the investment for the complete renovation of the first floor of the preclinical institutes, which has an area of close to 1,000 square metres, precisely 976 square metres, is €650,000.

Full statement of Prime Minister Kurti:

Allow me first to thank the director, Dr. Merita Hashani, and the Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, as well as the economic operator, who have worked diligently, well and quickly and have made us witnesses today to this transformation of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy.

€650,000 is the total amount of this investment for the complete renovation of the first floor of the preclinical institutes, covering a total area of nearly 1,000 square metres or exactly 976 square metres.

The transformation is radical, in that only the load-bearing walls and the interfloor slabs have been preserved, while all the other spaces have been rebuilt and equipped from scratch.

As part of this project two laboratories have been expanded and equipped with modern inventory: the Immunohistochemistry Laboratory and the Molecular Pathology Laboratory; then the pathologists’ rooms have been reorganised to accommodate more specialists, and the ancillary spaces for everyday work have been made functional. At the same time, the spaces for sample collection, the counter in the corridor, the guard room have also been arranged, and the student halls and the offices of pathology professors have been renovated.

The transformation, clinic after clinic and institute after institute, will continue until the radical qualitative improvement of our health and public healthcare.

Finally, I would also like to thank all the staff who work tirelessly here and are committed to ensuring that public healthcare in Kosovo and the patients receive the proper and deserved treatment. And now, before you, the director, Dr. Merita Hashani, will address you, and then Minister Arben Vitia.
