New Accelerator and Bunker Inaugurated at the Oncology Clinic, €2.7 Million Investment

Prishtina, 17 December 2025

The Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Acting Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, inaugurated the new accelerator and bunker at the Oncology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, a total investment worth €2.7 million.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Kurti said that this is welcome news for patients’ recovery and for significantly improved working conditions, with the most modern state-of-the-art equipment for doctors who, through their tireless work, treat citizens of our Republic—and beyond—who are affected by this disease with great professionalism.

He noted that during this mandate the clinic has undergone a profound transformation, significantly improving patient treatment as well as working conditions for specialist doctors, nurses, and staff overall.

“The Oncology Clinic is a model clinic in the Republic of Kosovo, and even in the Balkan region. In this regard, it should be mentioned that the number of beds has initially increased. There were only 45 beds; now there are 110. So, we have more than doubled the number of beds. But the reason we are here today is the investment in this bunker with its accompanying facilities, with a total value of €2.7 million, the completion of which was achieved in record time—only five months,” said Prime Minister Kurti.

The accelerator itself is valued at approximately €1.6 million and is also equipped with the advanced SIRAD system, which enables maximum precision in radiation therapy—targeting the tumor without damaging surrounding tissues.

The Acting Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, said that within a short period they are installing the third accelerator at this clinic, which will serve all citizens for their X-ray treatment and, at the same time, eliminate waiting lists entirely. “I cannot imagine a better gift for the Ministry and the staff—especially for patients who previously had to wait—than such an accelerator for the New Year,” said Minister Vitia, adding that investments will continue in all clinics so that citizens can receive all services without having to seek them outside public institutions.

Meanwhile, the Director of Oncology, Ilir Kurteshi, thanked Prime Minister Kurti, Minister Vitia, and the Director of the Hospital and University Clinical Service of Kosovo, Elvir Azizi, for the major investments made over the past five years in the clinic he leads. As a result, the Oncology Clinic has been placed in a very strong position in terms of quality services and the treatment of patients with malignant diseases.

The project inaugurated today includes: the new accelerator valued at approximately €1.6 million; the bunker, with an area of about 500 m², built in accordance with international radiological safety standards and all preparatory construction works, valued at €700,000; two treatment-planning systems valued at €200,000; a patient immobilization system valued at €50,000; an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system valued at €20,000; and a dosimetric system for accurate measurement and control of radiation dosage, valued at €180,000.

Full speech by Prime Minister Kurti:

Today we are at the Oncology Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo, a clinic which during this mandate has undergone a fundamental transformation, significantly improving patient treatment as well as working conditions for specialist doctors, nurses, and staff in general.

The Oncology Clinic is a model clinic in the Republic of Kosovo, and even in the Balkan region. In this regard, it should be noted that the number of beds has increased. There were only 45 beds; now there are 110. Thus, we have more than doubled the number of beds. But the reason we are here today is the investment in this bunker and its accompanying facilities, with a total value of €2.7 million, the completion of which was achieved in record time—only five months. Other countries far more developed than Kosovo, even in Europe, have taken up to 12 months to complete what was achieved in Kosovo in just five months.

The accelerator is valued at approximately €1.6 million and is also equipped with the advanced SIRAD system, as I learned from the doctors here, which enables maximum precision in radiation—targeting the tumor without damaging surrounding tissues.

It should also be emphasized that an important part of our joint investment in this clinic is the budget for the essential medicines list for patients with malignant diseases. Six years ago, in the first pre-pandemic year used for comparison—2019—it stood at around €8 million. Today, this too has more than doubled, reaching a total of €19 million.

On this occasion, I thank the Minister of Health, the Director of the Hospital and University Clinical Service of Kosovo, the Director of the Oncology Clinic, all economic operators, specialist doctors, administrative staff, and nurses for this excellent cooperation to date, which will further reduce waiting lists and is also welcome news for patients’ recovery and for much better working conditions with the most modern, state-of-the-art equipment for doctors who, through their tireless work, treat with great professionalism both citizens of our Republic and others who suffer from this disease.

Once again, congratulations to everyone on this extraordinary achievement.
