The Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with the Acting Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, accompanied by the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KEK, Gramos Hashani, the Chairman of the KEK Board, Valdrin Krasniqi, and other board members, visited the “Kosova B” Power Plant today to mark the successful completion of the works and the project for the modernization of production unit B2—one of the most important projects of the Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK) since the construction of this power plant, ensuring long-term stability in the country’s electricity supply.
“This is a great success by the KEK team, supported by the government and technical partners, now crowned with tangible and visible results,” said the Prime Minister.
This project represents a major technical and engineering intervention that has transformed the production unit into a much more efficient, stable, and secure system. As a result:
The production capacity has increased by about 35 MW, without any changes to the basic operational parameters.
The system’s efficiency has improved significantly, thanks to new technology and turbine modernization, now guaranteeing greater output with lower internal energy consumption.
Coal consumption has been reduced from 1.3 tons to 1.15 tons per MW, demonstrating a marked improvement in the energy conversion process.
For the same amount of electricity produced, pollution levels are lower, due to more efficient use of the fuel.
The unit’s lifespan has been extended by approximately 20 years, while the maintenance cycle for the new equipment has been lengthened from 6 to 9 years — an improvement that will save millions of euros in maintenance and ensure greater long-term stability.
The Capital Overhaul included:
Modernization of the turbine, which forms the heart of the production system.
Replacement of generator windings, enhancing voltage stability and efficiency.
Repair of the electrical switchgear, ensuring maximum network protection.
Replacement of the economizer, improving the steam heating process.
Repair of the flue gas duct, optimizing circulation and maintaining operational parameters.
Replacement of over 4,000 tubes in the condenser, increasing thermal efficiency.
Partial replacement of the hangers, improving the system’s structural safety and stability.
Prime Minister Kurti thanked KEK, its workers, management, Board, and the Ministry of Economy, noting that with the completion of Unit B2, the production capacity now exceeds 300 MW, reaching 318 MW, and together with the 277 MW from Unit B1, Kosova B now approaches a total generation capacity of 600 MW. He also expressed satisfaction with the announcement from the Acting CEO that Kosovo is currently exporting electricity, as KEK’s generation fully covers domestic consumption.
Speaking about the importance of these investments in Block 2 of the power plant, Minister Rizvanolli announced that similar investments will be made in Block 1 next year, where filters will also be installed. She thanked KEK’s workers, management, contractors, and all contributors to the project—from its negotiation phase during 2022/23 to its successful completion.
