Prime Minister Kurti’s Address at the 264th Meeting of the Government

Prishtina, 9 July 2025

Dear Deputy Prime Ministers, Ministers and Deputy Ministers,
Dear staff of the Prime Minister’s Office and members of the media,
Dear citizens,

First, I would like to extend my condolences to the Zejnullahu family for the loss of their loved one, the late Agon Zejnullahu. The news of his death has deeply shaken us all.

Much of what happened around midnight on July 7 is already public, thanks to recordings made by eyewitnesses. But to fully understand what occurred, a professional investigation by the institutions is required. For that, the cooperation between the Kosovo Police, the Police Inspectorate, the Institute of Forensic Medicine, and the Prosecutor’s Office is essential.

Five police officers are currently in custody. I call for and expect a thorough and swift investigation that reveals the full truth and uncovers all the circumstances, so that justice is served and accountability is ensured.

Let me be clear: there will be no shelter within or by institutions for anyone who may have overstepped their authority or violated the law while performing their official duties. Wearing the uniform is an honor, but the authority vested by the uniform is a responsibility.

The public discussions and judgments currently taking place are particularly difficult for the Zejnullahu family and the friends of the deceased. At the same time, the emerging trend of launching an anti-campaign against the Kosovo Police is harmful and not a solution.

Calls for justice and accountability are legitimate, but they are best fulfilled through the complete results of investigations and a professional verdict based on them.

Only then can we ensure that institutional accountability responds adequately to the case and serves as a guarantee that situations like that of July 7 will never be repeated.

On behalf of the government cabinet, I would also like to express, my condolences to the Lima family and to all colleagues of Kaqun Lima, the Platoon Commander in the Professional Unit for Fire and Rescue in Gjakova. He lost his life in the line of duty, on his way to serve. He will always be remembered for his selflessness in everyday work, his strong dedication to duty and responsibility, and for setting an example to others as a platoon leader.

Thank you!
