Renovation works begin on the Central Medicines Depot building and the foundation stone is laid for the construction of its annex, a €1.77 million investment

Fushë Kosovë, 24 June 2025

Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, together with Acting Minister of Health, Arben Vitia, took part in the ceremony marking the beginning of the full renovation works of the building that will house the Central Medicines Depot and laid the foundation stone for the construction of an annex – an investment by the Ministry of Health worth €1.77 million. The total area of the Central Depot will be 2,385 square meters, including the annex of 305 square meters. Works are expected to be completed within 180 days or six months.

“Since the privatization of Farmed in 2005, medicines in Kosovo have been kept – I cannot say properly stored – in unsafe, unsuitable facilities, with moisture and water leaks. This facility in Fushë Kosovë, located near the Central Election Commission, will now enable the storage of medicines in line with the highest international standards,” said Prime Minister Kurti.

He expressed his hopes that everything proceeds smoothly and that the economic operator completes the works efficiently and with quality.

Meanwhile, Minister of Health Arben Vitia stated that this is one of the most important projects in the field of health, as it concerns the storage of medicines, which directly impacts the quality of services provided to patients and citizens. He added that the Depot will be modern and, in addition to fulfilling technical conditions, will be equipped with various digital systems to enable optimal management and distribution of medicines not only to our hospitals but also to municipalities across the country, including Main Family Medicine Centers and Family Medicine Centers nationwide.

Full Speech of Prime Minister of Kurti:

Together with Acting Minister of Health Arben Vitia, we are here in Fushë Kosovë to inaugurate the start of works for the new Medicines Depot in the Republic of Kosovo.

Since the privatization of “Farmed” in 2005, medicines in Kosovo have been kept – I can’t say stored – in unsafe, unsuitable environments, with moisture and water leaks.

This facility in Fushë Kosovë, located near the Central Election Commission, will now serve to store medicines according to the highest international standards.

The space, which currently has a roof and walls but remains unfinished inside, covers a total area of 2,080 square meters. This will be expanded with a 305-square-meter annex. Out of the total, 519 square meters will be allocated for administrative purposes, while the rest will be dedicated to the best possible storage of medicines, which represent a matter of vital public interest.

All works are expected to last six months, or around 180 days, meaning we will be inaugurating the completed facility around the New Year. The total cost is approximately €1.77 million.

I hope everything goes well and that the economic operator completes the work as agreed – both efficiently and with quality.
Thank you very much, Minister, and congratulations to all citizens on this major achievement for our country, and especially for our health system and medicine.
