Joint statement of the Office of the President and the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo from the meeting with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron

The President of the Republic of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti were received today at the Élysee Palace in a meeting by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron.

In a meeting with President Macron, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti discussed the deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries, the dynamism of the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, as well as the latest developments in Kosovo, the region and Europe.

As for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti thanked President Macron for the commitment of France, in cooperation with Germany, for dynamizing this process. The President reiterated the full commitment of Kosovo’s institutions to the dialogue process, based on preserving the sovereignty, constitutional order, territorial integrity and functionality of Kosovo, which are inviolable.

In the meeting, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that Kosovo has proposed the general framework of the agreement, while they stated that the Franco-German proposal serves as a good basis for further discussions.

President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti also spoke about the recent developments in the north of the country, stressing that the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo remain committed to peace, stability and guaranteeing a safe environment for all citizens of the country. In this regard, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti have mentioned the destabilizing tendencies of Serbia, through the strengthening of its illegal structures in Kosovo, the intimidation of Serbian citizens and the incitement of criminal groups to undermine order and law in the north. The President and the Prime Minister said that Kosovo will continue to be coordinated with international partners to address security challenges.

President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti said that Kosovo continues to be an example in the region and beyond regarding the protection of the rights of non-majority communities. The president said that this is an achievement of Kosovo and the western allies, therefore she emphasized the need for joint actions to preserve these achievements.

Furthermore, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that Kosovo is a reliable and credible partner of France and other Euro-Atlantic allies, and that strengthening its international position is an added value for the international community and the democratic world. In this direction, she spoke about the concrete steps taken by Kosovo’s institutions for membership in the Euro-Atlantic structures. President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti have requested that France’s support continue for Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe, then in the Partnership for Peace program, as a first step towards full membership in NATO as well as Kosovo’s application for membership in the European Union and other international organizations.

In the meeting with the Macron counterpart, President Osmani and Prime Minister Kurti also talked about the importance of completing the visa liberalization process during the Czech presidency of the EU Council, a decision which will contribute to strengthening the credibility of the EU.
